BIOS stands for Basic Input/ Output Services. Every device on the computer requires BIOS. The BIOS is stored on the Flash ROM. Nowadays, motherboard bios is retained in a small flash chip. It can be reprogrammed using bios update files from the motherboard or a laptop manufacturer. Bios chip can also be updated by connecting special equipment programmers to it, and flashing the files directly to the flash memory. In a desktop computer bios chip is often much bigger than chip, which is found in a laptop. Here is the example of how the bios chip looks in the desktop motherboard. Here are a few pictures with bios chips taken from various motherboards:
This picture shows how the bios chip looks in the laptop motherboard. Sometimes bios fail and it is not possible to boot the computer anymore. In that case, direct chip programming in the board helps. Another solution is to remove the bad chip and solder the good one in its place. Bios update programmes can be downloaded from the motherboard or laptop manufacturer. It is the executable file which you will have to execute in the Windows operating system. Then, the computer will ask whether you are absolutely sure to update bios. If you accept it, the computer will reboot and will start bios updating process. While updating bios one cannot do anything that could disturb the process. It is recommended to fully charge the laptop. It is very important to let the update process finish its work; otherwise it will end without having booted motherboard. There is some special equipment to reprogram bios flash chips. Usually, it is the flash chip programmer which we connect to the chip. So, as it has been stated above, BIOS can be replaced in two ways. One way is to get the flash file from the manufacturer and the second way is to replace the BIOS chip by soldering the new one. A desktop computer BIOS chip is usually bigger than it is in a laptop.
