To replace the laptop LCD screen you definitely need to disassemble screen holding plastic. It is done by unscrewing 4 screws on the front. The screws usually are hidden with decorative rubber.

For example on IBM T20 to remove LCD need to be unscrewed 3 screws and to remove bezel plastic. In this laptop screws are hidden with plastic caps. Then you need to unscrew two screws on both sides on the front of the LCD lid as shown in the picture. There usually are two screws and four plastic caps. Just remove the plastic caps and you will see. Unscrewing LCD holding screws. Two leads must be disconnected. It is inverter lead and LCD signal lead.

To remove LCD flex cable in ibm T20 you need first remove keyboard holding two screws underneath. Then should be removed screws holding the touch pad (palm rest) plastic from underneath side. After the removing of keyboard you will see that there are two screws to be unscrewed. Remove the touch pad plastic. Also another plastic thing must be removed called Hinge cover Plastic.
