How to Check Computer Memory
There are special software applications to check computer memory. For example, you could use MemTest. It checks the memory for faults, displays processor speed and type and displays memory type. It is a very good
tool that is especially designed for laptops. You will need to burn it on a CD drive as it comes on a CD file. After you burn the CD, it becomes
bootable and you can use it by simply booting the computer from this CD.
You don’t need to configure anything to use it. Just after the boot, it starts checking the computer memory for faults. The amount of memory
on the computer is displayed on the screen on the left upper corner.
To check the amount of memory in Windows, you have to simply go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, System and you will see the required
information about memory, Windows and processor speed.
If there is no operating system on the laptop or desktop computer you are using, and if this computer is a PC, you could simply use
Memtest or UBCD4WIN. Another method would be to get
the memory modules from inside the laptop and then look into the labels that are printed on them. However, a label may not always be present, or
the memory module capacity may not always be printed on them. In such cases, you need to check out the capacity of 1 memory chip and then
multiply it by the number of memory modules you have.
You can also check the amount of RAM while the computer is booting. There is a short screen that shows the computer checking the memory and it
displays the memory on the screen. This is about 4 to 6 seconds after the power button is pressed.
These are almost all of the ways in which you can check computer memory.
How to Use MemTest
First you will need to download the software. Here is a link from where you can download it. It will be in a .iso format. The file will be likely archived, which means
you will have to unarchive it first.
Then, you will have to burn it with Nero or any other CD burning software application. You don’t need to change any settings; just open the
file with the burning software and give the command to burn it.
Thirdly, make your desktop or laptop computer boot from the DVD/CD drive. This is done by going to the BIOS and setting that first bootable
device to the DVD.
Fourth, you have to place your CD in the drive and restart the computer. You will see a boot screen similar to this:-

Now, you don’t have to do anything but to leave it working for about an hour to perform all its tests. It shows information about your system
such as its processor speed, its RAM speed and type, its bus speed and the cache memory of the processor.
It will run the test for about an hour and then display a message about the RAM state. If the RAM is faulty in anyway, you get a red alert
message.
